Although travelling solo, Malta still has plenty of opportunities that you could chase alone such as attending events, exploring the historic cities, going on a group tour, and mingling with the locals, especially during nightlife.
Navigating the island is very easy for a solo traveller due to its compact size and easy access to public transport. Apart from that, you can feel safe on our island as getting lost is simply impossible as residential areas are always within reach.
But why should I visit?
Our islands are a mix of relaxation and exploration, making sightseeing pleasurable. With our bilingual diversity, English is our second main language, so communication with the locals is not a problem. At the same time, you could also add Italian to the mix.
Speaking from first-hand experience, Malta is a place where a solo traveller can explore a wide range of interests providing the perfect balance for a unique and customised holiday.
Malta is an island in the centre of the Mediterranean, easily accessible by commercial flights from the majority of European countries.
The most popular European cities like London, Rome and Paris could be reached in under 4 hours.
The climate here is so diverse, that throughout the entire year, we have mild winters and very hot summers.
Malta is part of the European Union and Schengen so travelling from a European country is very easy and no VISA or additional documents are required. Only a valid passport is needed if you are staying for under 90 days.
Below are several essentials one must know as a visitor when travelling to Malta. Keep the below handy.
Your daily budget depends on your travel lifestyle. As a local, we can say that prices in Malta have risen and continue to rise, so as a whole, Malta is not a cheap place. However, this all comes down to what type of lifestyle you tend to live in.
If you do some research you still find that there are very cheap places to stay in and also you do find cheap food around.
Below is a rough breakdown of what it would cost you to holiday in Malta daily including accommodation, food, activities, nightlife, transport, and tours.
All in all, on average to holiday in Malta, you need somewhere between €75 to €120. If you want to go all out, since money is not a concern to you, you can spend well over €200 to €500 a day.
While costs should be taken seriously, you shouldn't allow it to be more important than your safety.
Malta is a very safe country compared to other countries. According to the Global Organised Crime Index, we are the 95th safest from 193 countries worldwide and the 19th from 44 countries in Europe.
Here are some of our tips that we also use to help you feel safe wherever you are in Malta.
However, although we are a safe country, there is always a risk for anything to happen, so you must still stay alert in certain situations to avoid injury or anything else.
We are here to ensure you hear our facts about safety on the island, however, rest assured that Malta is a very safe country and if you need of any assistance, you can go to a police station or dial 112 for emergency services.

These localities ensure that you are in an area that is well-lit and has easy access to public transport.
As locals what we can say is that Malta is beautiful all year round as each season opens up different opportunities and experiences. Most probably the majority of your budget falls on flights and hotels. However, let us get down to business with booking your flights first.
Flight prices fluctuate on a regular basis depending on the time of year and also the day of the week you are flying. With proper planning, and plenty of time before your departure, you can ensure that you can secure great prices and a smooth journey ahead.
There are hundreds of websites to book your flights, so you will want to compare options to find a great deal.
In conjunction with booking your flights, you could also reserve a place to stay. You can opt to do this before or after your flight booking. Malta offers a good range of hostels, B&Bs, hotels and also apartments.
When we travel, we use Booking.com as their website is extremely user-friendly and most of their accommodation offers you to pay at the property or a short time before departing for your holiday. This ensures that you do not have to pay anything in advance and also if you wish to change or book multiple hotels you can do so very easily.
Booking.com is our main source for finding and booking hotels for our holidays, so we highly recommend this platform to book yours. Here is a short friendly guide on how to make use of it.
Hostels are a cheaper form of accommodation and they are the best way to go to save money. Below are some hostels we recommend booking.
Find more hostels or other types of accommodation here at Booking.com.
Transport in Malta is an ongoing amenity to the public, therefore there are a handful of ways to get around the islands at any time of the day and night. Both Malta and Gozo have the same public transport system, however, Comino does not have any transport as it is too small for such a system.
The Tallinja is an affordable way to get around the islands, however you must sacrifice a chunk of time. There are several travel cards to help you save on trips such as the Explore Flex Card, Explore Unlimited travel for 7 days and the 12 Single Day Journeys.
Each card can be purchased from a sales representative's office or a machine card dispenser. The offices are usually located within the major hubs such as Valletta.
When travelling by bus keep in mind that plenty of tourists and locals use it so expect them to be full at certain times of the day. When travelling alone keep all your belongings safe and try and travel at less peak hours, however, we understand that it might be difficult at times.
Renting a car is a more expensive alternative, however, worth it if you are planning to visit locations that are difficult for public transport to reach. Using a car helps you travel around the island more efficiently, however, it could get expensive depending on the choice you make.
When we rent our cars we use Discover Cars as they provide a user-friendly website that offers a wide choice of vehicles for everyone's taste.
Discover Cars offers great deals and flexibility whether to book your car for just one day or multiple days.
With the compact size of our islands, the cost of a taxi will not be that expensive if you use it once in a while.
For you as a solo traveller, we recommend the following:
To have hassle-free transport from the airport to your hotel and back, an airport transfer does just that. You can prebook either a hotel shuttle bus or a private transfer.
Being that you are alone, you can still explore Malta to the fullest capability. Leaving seasons aside, we want to break down in a few points what you can do here:
