While costs should be taken seriously, you shouldn't allow it to be more important than your safety.

Malta is a very safe country compared to other countries. According to the Global Organised Crime Index, we are the 95th safest from 193 countries worldwide and the 19th from 44 countries in Europe.

Here are some of our tips that we also use to help you feel safe wherever you are in Malta.

  • The crime and violent rate on the island is low, however, do not take it with a pinch of salt as petty theft, and pickpocketing do occur more than you think, especially in overpopulated areas.
  • Most places in Malta are walkable since they are compact, pedestrian-friendly and well-lit. This ensures that you are comfortable exploring without feeling isolated or maybe overwhelmed.
  • The Maltese people are known for their warmth and affection with tourists, making them feel welcome. We are also the type of people who are ready to help a tourist who needs assistance.
  • Public transport is used a lot by foreigners and also locals, however, it is safe. Buses can usually feel overcrowded, so if you are not comfortable you could always wait for another bus or use alternative transportation.

However, although we are a safe country, there is always a risk for anything to happen, so you must still stay alert in certain situations to avoid injury or anything else.

  • Keep valuables safe at all times especially when visiting crowded places. Any unnecessary valuables must be kept at your accommodation.
  • Do not take any rides from people who do not claim that are taxis. Use the apps available to book a taxi and ensure you check the number plate of the vehicle before hopping into the car.
  • Visiting places like Paceville where alcohol is consumed, be aware and remember that you are alone and must stay alert.
  • If you are here for the beaches, then beware of which beaches are safe to swim, especially on a windy day. Flags are hung to warn of any danger and you could also use this guide to see which beaches are safe or not.

We are here to ensure you hear our facts about safety on the island, however, rest assured that Malta is a very safe country and if you need of any assistance, you can go to a police station or dial 112 for emergency services.

How To Get Around The Islands Safely

Transport in Malta is an ongoing amenity to the public, therefore there are a handful of ways to get around the islands at any time of the day and night. Both Malta and Gozo have the same public transport system, however, Comino does not have any transport as it is too small for such a system.

Taking the Bus

The Tallinja is an affordable way to get around the islands, however you must sacrifice a chunk of time. There are several travel cards to help you save on trips such as the Explore Flex Card, Explore Unlimited travel for 7 days and the 12 Single Day Journeys.

Each card can be purchased from a sales representative's office or a machine card dispenser. The offices are usually located within the major hubs such as Valletta.

When travelling by bus keep in mind that plenty of tourists and locals use it so expect them to be full at certain times of the day. When travelling alone keep all your belongings safe and try and travel at less peak hours, however, we understand that it might be difficult at times.

Renting A Car - Freedom to Explore

Renting a car is a more expensive alternative, however, worth it if you are planning to visit locations that are difficult for public transport to reach. Using a car helps you travel around the island more efficiently, however, it could get expensive depending on the choice you make.

When we rent our cars we use Discover Cars as they provide a user-friendly website that offers a wide choice of vehicles for everyone's taste.

Discover Cars offers great deals and flexibility whether to book your car for just one day or multiple days.

  • Pick-Up: When booking always check from where you will pick up the car
  • Insurance: Always and we mean always check that you are fully covered for insurance in case of an accident or theft.
  • Deposit: Several rental companies hold a sum of money as a security deposit. The amount varies from company to company.
  • Assistance: If you have any difficulty in renting a vehicle there is a chat box on the website where you can speak with an assistant then you could always ask to speak with a representative of the company which will answer you within 24 hours.

Catch a Taxi

With the compact size of our islands, the cost of a taxi will not be that expensive if you use it once in a while.

For you as a solo traveller, we recommend the following:

  • Use a mobile app to book your taxi as you can track your driver and you will also have all the details of the car and driver. Several apps include Ecabs, Bolt and Uber.
  • Always make sure you check the number plate before entering the car. All taxi number plates end in Y (Ex: FLY 123).
  • There are stands in popular places where you find a line of taxis waiting. Always ask for the cost beforehand.

Airport Transfers

To have hassle-free transport from the airport to your hotel and back, an airport transfer does just that. You can prebook either a hotel shuttle bus or a private transfer.
